September 6, 2009

Greetings from Gita.

The Gita dinner last
month was delightful. We had a nice crowd and it turned out to be
special evening for me. In addition to celebrating my birthday Juan and
I celebrated our 20th anniversary of being together. We’re looking
forward to the next 20. Thanks for your good wishes.

So, today is Labor Day. Hope it was appropriately restful and labor free
for you all. Labor Day has always signified the end of summer. Until I
was 37 years old I was always involved in the Education business as a
teacher or administrator. Labor Day always meant back to school time.
Now it signifies the middle of the hurricane season and a day off.
Primavera was closed today after a very busy weekend.

GITA DINNER MEETING on Monday, September 14, 2009

Our next dinner meeting will be on Monday, the 14th of September at 7 PM
at Primavera. Primavera is located at 830 E. Oakland Park Boulevard just
east of KMart. Cost is $20 payable at the door. There is currently space
available for this dinner. Hope to see you there. We’re now featuring
“Singles” tables for those who’d like to meet new people.

We are now accepting reservations for parties of ANY SIZE up to tables
of 12. When you make a reservation, please give me the names (both first
and last) of those in your party. ALL seats will be reserved. When you
make a reservation by email I ALWAYS respond. If you don’t get a
response I probably didn’t get your email.

New menu and new prices. Don’t forget the Special Gita Menu – Appetizer,
Entree and Dessert for $15.95. Available every night except Saturday. We
also have very reasonably priced Appetizers and Entrees. Also great
banquet facilities, by the way. Thanks to all of you who’ve been so
supportive. Don’t forget we’re right across the street from The Rising
Action Theatre, which is currently performing “Take Me Out.” Dinner and
the theatre turns out to be a nice evening.

The real estate market continues to simmer. More and more foreclosures
and short sales continue to dominate. Patience is required to deal in
this market. Getting financing is still a challenge.

If you have questions about short sales or foreclosures or what’s going
on in general, call me or any of our talented Gita member Realtors.

The Opera Group meets frequently to view operas. Some are live and
others are on film. The opera group meets at a new location at 1300 East
Sunrise Blvd. This new location is larger than the previous venue. We
are grateful to the Stonewall library for its support of this activity.
To get more information and to get your name on their email list you
need to get in touch with Dominic Bisignano at [email protected]

The Ballet Group meets on the 2nd (second) Sunday of the month and the
Opera Group meets on the 4th (fourth) Sunday of the month.

At 2pm, on Sunday, September 13th, the ballet group will present an
exciting full-length production from the Paris Opera Ballet of PAQUITA
instead of the previously announced LA SYLPHIDE. The production is (as
close as possible) a recreation of its 1846 premiere at the Paris Opera
and is a feast for your eyes and ears. Mark your calendars. For more
information contact Tony Janik at [email protected]

Mah Jongg anyone? this ancient game from China combines skill and luck
and is played with tiles. If you like cards or board games and a
challenge, you will probably enjoy it. Beginners welcome. Contact Keith

Read several good books this past month. Some that you might consider

The Girl Who Played with Fire by Stieg Larsson is a reunion of many of
the characters from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. If you liked the
first one you’ll like the second even more. Quite a good story.

That Old Cape Magic by Richard Russo is a novel of great introspection
approached with humor and sensitivity. I liked it a lot. It’s the story
of a middle-aged man confronting his parents and their failed marriage,
his own troubled one and his daughter’s new life. It’s better than it

Intervention by Robin Cook turned out to be NOT one of Robin Cook’s
better efforts. Save your time and money on this one.

Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery came highly recommended from
my friend Tony. It’s a beautifully written book about life, art,
literature, philosophy, culture, class, privilege, and power as seen
through the eyes of a 54-year-old French concierge and a precocious but
troubled 12-year-old girl. Unfortunately, too much talk of phenomenology
tends to put me to sleep. Still highly recommended.

Alex Cross’s Trial by James Patterson and Richard DiLallo. Don’t know
what to make of these co-authored books. Perhaps, books by committee
will be next. Regardless of the writing process it’s a pretty good book
about lynchings in the South in the early part of the 20th century.

Have you read any good books lately?

Pictures from all previous dinners since 2003 can be found on the GITA
website. From the home page select “Photo Gallery” then select GITA-Dinners.
If you’d like prints, suitable for framing, of any of the photos on the
website just let me know.

Chef Giacomo presents cooking classes frequently. For news about
upcoming classes or to make reservations call Primavera at 954-564-6363.
Remember you need to tell them that you are a Gita member to get the $10
discount. Giacomo is a most amusing and entertaining teacher and really
knows his stuff. Class is delicious.

We are hoping to add more member’s business cards to our website. If
you’d like us to add your card you need to either send me a card or
email me a scan of your card. The more the merrier.

Each month at our dinners we have a raffle and give away modest prizes.
There is no charge to participate in the raffle. Again this month we
will be accepting modest raffle gifts from interested members who choose
to promote their business in this most entertaining way. Thanks to all
of our donors.

Thanks for your continued support. Hope to see you on the 14th.
