December 7, 2010

Greetings from GITA

Welcome
to December.  Now that we’re experiencing a little cold snap we’re
hoping it’s a LOT colder and snowy up North to get those Snowbirds on
the move. Welcome back, to those of you who’ve returned and continued
good cheer to those of you who don’t stray.

Hope you all have a wonderful holiday season.

We thank you all for your good wishes and continued support and hope to see you very soon.

GITA DINNER MEETING on Monday, December 13, 2010

We
had quite a large crowd at last month’s dinner.  Everyone had a great
time.  Our next dinner meeting will be next Monday, the 13th of December
at 7 PM at Primavera. Primavera is located at 830 E. Oakland Park
Boulevard just west of Dixie and east of KMart. Cost is $20 payable at
the door.  There
is currently space available for this dinner. We’re now featuring
“Singles” tables for those who’d like to meet new friends.  Hope to see
you there.

RESERVING SEATS AT DINNER

We
are now accepting reservations for parties of ANY SIZE up to tables of
12. When you make a reservation, please give me the names (both first
and last) of those in your party. ALL seats will be reserved. When you
make a reservation by email I ALWAYS respond. If you don’t get a
response I probably didn’t get your email.

REAL ESTATE

We’re
happy to report that the real estate business is showing signs of
renewed life.  There are a lot more people shopping for bargains just in
time for the holidays.

If you are refinancing or know someone
who is, you might want to give us a call and see if we can’t save you
some money on your title insurance and closing costs.

PRIMAVERA

We’ve
been very busy lately and are happy to report that business is up
dramatically from last year.  We appreciate all of your support.
Remember that we have a couple of banquet rooms for your private
parties.  We still have some open dates before the holidays.

On
December 15 we’re going to be celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the
movie “Psycho” with a party and showing of the movie.  More info to
follow.  Get your costume ready now.

We’ll also be serving a fabulous dinner on Christmas Day and will be partying, eating, drinking and dancing on New Year’s Eve.

The Italian Language class now meets from 6:30 to 8:30PM every Wednesday.
The classes are still free to all under the GITA patronage. Instead
of a fee, we invite participating students to make a donation, 100% of
which goes to Tuesdays Angels.

Since we revived this class in Oct 2009, we have donated $589 to
Tuesdays Angels due to the efforts of our volunteer teacher, John
Ritter, and the generosity of our students.

BOOK BEAT

Several
people have suggested that they would enjoy participating in a book
discussion group.  If you have experience or would be interested in
leading such a group please let me know.

I had a wonderful time
this month reading Philip Roth.  Before reading his newest book,
Nemesis, I thought I’d catch up on a couple that I missed.

I
first read two of his novels which include his alter ego, Zuckerman,
American Pastoral (1997) and The Human Stain (2000)  and then followed
with his newest book, Nemesis (2010).  They were all terrific.  He is
such a gifted writer that his prose is mesmerizing and just flows
effortlessly.  He’s clever and witty and writes outstanding dialogue.
Although I really loved all three books,  I particularly enjoyed The
Human Stain which is set in the 80’s when the ongoing Clinton fiasco
reflected the moral standard of the time and Nemesis, set in 1944 at the
height of the polio epidemic.  Pick up any of these books and I think
you won’t be disappointed.  I’m delighted that Roth is so prolific and
has so many more books that I haven’t yet read.

Bad Blood by John Sandford was a pretty fun read.  Lots of violence and sexual mayhem keep things entertaining.

Have you read any good books lately?

MAH JONGG

Jongg anyone? this ancient game from China combines skill and luck and
is played with tiles. If you like cards or board games and a challenge,

We
are hoping to add more member’s business cards to our website. If you’d
like us to add your card you need to either send me a card or email me a

Each
month at our dinners we have a raffle and give away extravagant prizes.
There is no charge to participate in the raffle. Again this month we
will be accepting modest raffle gifts from interested members who choose
to promote their business in this most entertaining way.  Special
thanks to David Malatesta and his Italian Cleaning Service for their
kind donation to our raffle.

Thanks for your continued support. Hope to see you on the 13th.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL !!!
